Well, I've been teasing a little bit about who's coming today and we are so glad the former Sen. Jim DeMent joined the Christian perspective. Today he is a former Sen. and the unit in and out in the United States Senate from the state of South Carolina.
He was president Heritage foundation in the days, the founder and president of the conservative partnership Institute is not just someone who worked in politics and work talk today about Christians being about the politics and other things too but I just want to welcome you and thank you Sen. DeMent for being with us on the Christian perspective. Today Chris it's always an opportunity to talk about our Lord and Savior, but to do it in the context of how we impact the culture.
I would just take a minute could always like our audience to get to know our guest. Can you tell people little bit about you and your family and your how you got into politics and all that. Yeah, I sure can. And thanks Chris yeah I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina with a single mom and two brothers and sister and so we were all working since the time I can first remember and she started up ballroom dancing school in our house. I married my not only high school but I guess middle school sweetheart after I graduated college I went to the University of Tennessee and then got a in an MBA from Clemson later as I was working but I was running from the Lord until I was about 25 years all pronouncements it came true that convinced me. The Bible was true, but I came to the Lord when I was 25 my life hasn't been the same sense and I we we had four children and I started a business ran that business for over 15 years, but I never ran for public office until I was 47 years old and I got no frustrated with what was happening because I was the community leader and volunteer in a lot of areas and I finally realized so many of the problems were dealing with were related to bad public policy particularly bad federal policy that created a lot of bad incentives to form families and work and things like that will ran for Congress when I was 47 years old with no political background in it up winning and not term limited myself to six years in the house but I saw that so many of the things that we tried to do in the house. It was good. Died in the Senate so I decided to go to run for the Senate them I was some blessed to be elected. I guess I can say blessed to be elected, but I term limited myself and in the Senate as well because I didn't want to become what I went there to change to support good policy on the inside and that after four years at Heritage. We started the conservative partnership Institute as I'd spent years helping to elect good people to the house in the Senate but then just saw so many of them, will under pressure in Washington that there just wasn't no support system to do the right thing. So the conservative partnership is there to help conservatives in the house and Senate in every way we can we help him get good staff.
We train them on how the place works we give them a place to meet.
We support them when they being attacked by whether it's Republicans or Democrats. That's what we do and we we see it makes a difference that when when we've got a lot of people working together get the backs of the good people there and converse.
They maintain their courage more and they're willing to stay in the fight, so I'm enjoying very much what I'm doing and still traveling a fair amount. The reason I wrote Satan is there Christians. I guess all that so much of Christian seem to have backed away and a lot of wasted many of the things that we believe now I've been stigmatized and and even churches are are saying things are why the Bible says along Satan's there is just really election of a lot of my questions over 30 or 40 years, but is put in the context of the novel so that people can relate it to their own lives of the suffering and tragedies of people go through, but also the need for love and the power that comes from the body of Christ.
I love that you made it as a novel. I'm amazed at the connections I'm finding out, and we've never met personally with out of the ball a few times, but so you're from Greenville South Carolina. My wife is from that area should answer that one connection and then I went to what was called the Babs because else Charleston Southern University over Charles on the other side of the state from you and my senior year in college. As of the first campaign you volunteered a lot of time in with Tom. Your campaign but in 1986 the young whippersnapper named Henry McMaster who is now Gov. of of the South Carolina was running for the seat that you eventually one Chris Hollings that we took for towing seated yesterday and yes oh Henry McMaster was running back in 1986 gets rid following in my first paid campaign job. I was the state field director for for Henry McMaster's campaign at and then I found out a while ago that your family is on property near where I live in Boone North Carolina so it's amazing how ricotta connected to these things, both politically and Emily was over the years and it's just amazing how God brings people together. What I wanted to commend you for the book you wrote is called Satan's there humor and a lot of other books with this is one that you chose to write a novel and a lot of yacht. I hear what academic Christians are to me. It's almost snobbish place. I will only read acts of works of nonfiction, and I would encourage you to not limit yourself in that area because Satan is there even though it's a work of fiction because it has, it makes it interesting. It gives short story what's going on but everything in there is biblically based on historically and factual in in the things that are presented so you still can learn a lot, even though it is a work of fiction and is a novel, what were you when you decided to write a novel senators that like the other books you written. Was it because you just had this interesting story. What made you change the style of books that you written in the past will have actually done more thinking in research on the Bible on Christianity than I have politics and it's really more of an interest to me because it certainly is certainly more internal in nature, but I've been working on this book for 15 years and it didn't start as a novel it just started his doing a little bit of research about different questions in the Bible about creation itself about whether the Bible is all true and I'm just was collecting facts and again, a lot of it was shy to see how science aligns with biblical truth and creation. But the it became so sick as my publisher said it would it would just been hard work your way through just all the facts and them so my publisher actually suggested I build a story around it because I was dealing with a lot of questions like if God is in control of everything wiser. So much evil and suffering in the world and you questions like that, play themselves out in real life story so the book is all about facts. I things are true, but there woven into the story of people living through things that we all live through in different ways and so that's just how the questions are presented by the characters themselves.
But I think as people read it they'll realize that there is it's not fiction. It is a story that people can relate to because no one gets through this life without some suffering and tragedy and and we just have to ask the question of why that is so weak in this book get into a lot of God this world in the first place. There will be right back. This show is brought to you by generous jokes. Jim did admit he's got a new book out called their it's a great book it talks about creation is the Bible is dessert true science that aligns with the Bible is a biblical truth talks about creation. Talked about why God allows bad thing happen in our life. Why would God create this world that has been in it. When we already had perfect heaven and and yacht you got to tell you we we like the act all high and mighty and religious but really, those are questions all of us ask so harsh I guess today Sen. Jim DeMent as his great book go to Amazon or where buyer books and looked up Satan's dear and order it today that state Satan. There you want to check out this great new bit book from Sen. Jim DeMent center so where worded idea. Satan's there come from well the title is taken from the first chapter of Job where it is an interesting passage not and I never did like it because first of all, God and Satan are talking and God said what about my servant Joe. It is a wonderful righteous God and Satan challenges theirs and I just read this it it says in Job 19 through 11, does Job fear God for nothing.
You not put a hedge around him and his Hal household and everything he has blessed the work of his hands so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land, but now, stretch out your hand and strike everything he has and he will surely curse you to your face. Satan was essentially shut up challenging or charging the with grabbing Joe and saying if you don't blaspheme evil people.
Curse you, and this the book. What takes that person and and actually asked the question if one of the reasons we go through this world with all the suffering and tragedy that is around us and we see so much of it today in the Ukraine is to prove Satan all that this life is a battle between good enabling every time we worship God in the middle of hardship and suffering, we prove Satan wrong and that's what Job did.
Job didn't like it complained about it but he never wavered from believing that God was with him that he would see God in this life and so the characters go through this. Just like all of us do, but I think that the weakness in the church today is that they're afraid to ask questions about creation because we cannot believe that. Okay what really happened was random evolution.
We like to say like one of the characters because of the low Santa Claus God created the universe that the Bible is true. But we know it's really not. But costs. Science says that again. God didn't create the world and I just don't see Christians able to defend their faith in a way particularly as we get took Christian morality and the morality of our culture today that I think very many men. A lot of Christians are afraid to challenge all this time agree with stuff and and and I'm sorry but no, no, I don't use.
I was well I just wanted to reiterate what you're saying. I've got two kids in college right now in and it is terrible right now because even their friends get you on college campuses. Christians are shut down or canceled out on college campuses it in in and the liberals on college campuses will put up with anything but a student who he takes a strong belief in Jesus Christ. Jesus scares them to their will. From what I've seen from a lot of my kids friends is a lot of kids who profess to be Christians is not just kids. Sen. Dole to today. They don't really know what they believe and why they believe it. That's why were putting all this culture engagement summit where you're coming to speak on April 30 is Christians need to know what the Bible says all issues like your transgender homosexuality, abortion creation so many other issues out there that most Christians don't have a clue what the Bible truly said they don't have a clue because they don't read the Bible. I know you're familiar water surveys and studies that show very Christians ever read the Bible on a daily basis and over 90% work Marta says that over 90% of people who claim to be evangelical pastors in America don't don't preach on issues that they consider social issues so any offices of the faithful church attender only once every three weeks of youth every read your Bible, Sen., and you and then you don't hardly ever go to church and you Sen. pastor who doesn't address these issues. How are you supposed to know what God says on these issues and be able to take a stand. I think it's so important for books like yours, point out that Christians need to know what's going on in and so I also ask you question you think it's okay for Christians to question these issues and try to understand what God was doing math, I think it is better and I think that's what you dress your book. It is okay for us to have questions as long as we try to dig in and learn the answers to those questions will one of the things I say in the book and I believe in my life is that the truth is never afraid of questions and if you're afraid to ask the questions you're probably not going to find truth and I think a lot of believers today actually believes contradictory things that you know the earth was created by extending we came by random act evolution on that and the other compartment of their mind they believe God created the earth, has a purpose for our life in some believe that okay the Bible is really kind of fairy tales about floods and things like that but then there's another compartment that wants to believe the Bible is true but as you pointed out not only don't read it but they don't have pastors who really teaching what it means, what the Old Testament means for us today and there are so many things. If we understand in the Old Testament like like the temple, for instance, Jesus tells us where the temple so everything we read in the Old Testament about the temple and how God cleans claims as it he does that for us today, and the more you get into it and the more questions you ask, the more competence you have in your faith. That doesn't mean everybody's going to agree on exactly how to interpret the Bible because some parts of the door history some poetry and songs and some of our analogies, but you you need to look at it and everyone who a lot of fundamentalist will not even like the questions that the characters ask of you.
What you do, do you have to accept Christ in this life. In order to be saved. All of us have always believed that you look at verses is if there are people who were children of God Jesus blood applies to all of us does that mean that people are justified and assigned to five who may never have heard the word Jesus still trust God to save them now. How you answer that is you have to began in and asked those questions and some people who read the book said I don't really agree with that message one five because that's just a question that the characters are asking and looking for Bible verses to answer but I think the basics like Chris is.
People need to have confidence there is a God who created this universe that he had a reason to do and that he loves each and every one of and that the Bible is true but you have to really work it understanding how that aligns with what we believe is true today and so I just found it fascinating, and while I didn't come to solid answers on every question I asked what we came up with in the book of what we could just call possibilities that could exist based on what the Bible is saying so again for me. Having the questions actually added confidence to me that there is a God that the Bible is true, but there are some powerful faults in the book such as God before his power in this physical world to his body, and there again a lot of verses that we bring up it appears that the body of Christ in our players. Our worship God's power in this physical world and then we see that in the Old Testament to Moses has to have his arms held up. I think in this case a picture of God is being held up by the body of Christ God just like the body of Jesus cries is God's power in this world.
And then Jesus tells us we are his body, so there are a lot of things to think about, and I found Christian. Some people just don't like to go very deep, so some people may not want to get into all of this, but for those who want to have confidence that there is a God that the Bible is true and that there is a very important reason that we all go through this for I would just challenge people to read it and talk about it. I think they'll come away with a whole Lotta confidence in what they believe a man will come talk to Sen. Jim Guilmette is written a new book called Satan there wanting to say I come back to talk about some of the attack, America has a strong Christian heritage. Don't know if it's really important role God and the Bible is indicated and found Dr. for me with crystalline bargaining journey having read much of America's time and how to blog about the government and the men who helped forge the new kind of Republic acknowledge the creator truth about the creation of the mounting father principles America to join this show is brought to you by generous Joe's coffee company with the Christian perspective, this is the answer that Christians and conservatives have been looking for a coffee company that gives back to causes you care about.

Welcome Chris and Mike yesterday met with talking about a new book written there. I encourage you to get a copy of this thought-provoking book.
Ask a lot of questions that we all might think of the back of her mind, but maybe we never out of those questions in church work right to be embarrassed that we don't know the answer to some of those questions are think somebody might criticize us for even asking such a question here, centered met. This is this book ask a lot of questions in this book is pretty controversial and you don't really discriminate you got a minute I think most atheists and some Christians which hopefully is brought some attention to the book, but if there been any attacks come on you for some of the things you position you've taken in the book, but I think the media folks or whether they're on the right of the left are really afraid to get into some of these questions and certainly have had some lively conversations with people read it your personal conversations and some folks are studying it in the box and Bible groups in and asked me to come speak and talk about how I came up with the different questions and answers so I want that. Maybe I'm hoping to use the platform God gave man politics talk about his kingdom and how to relate in the book is giving me a good platform to do that. What a blessing to have men and women like you in public office, and that really that really should be the purpose of think of a lot of politicians were Christians that gives us a platform or more public figures that others might not have share the truth of God's word and center route.
We really seen the death of truth in our culture today in our education system, media, politics and and unfortunately even in the church's men identifies women a competing in women's sports and and the media tells us that were racist. If we do or don't believe certain things are anyone suggest anything that goes against culture today. There can't culture also tells us that there is no such thing as truth anymore so so many people today don't know what they believe and why they believe it. What you think that we don't believe in truth anymore. I know you talk about this in the book. Yeah, we've we've lost our moorings, even as Christians because Jesus tells us how we can know the truth and how we can be free.
If you follow my word, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. And so you gotta know his word and you got to go out and intentionally follow him above, without truth there is no more tossed about like waves and in the sea and were visible open and then evil prevails for clusters. There is no standard of truth anymore and I do think a lot of Christians and as you mentioned, pastors or even afraid to deal with an absolute truth, but that's what that's what we have to have if we're going to know the truth and were going to be free in this particularly as conservatives we talk a lot about freedom, but I think a lot of political conservatives are forgetting that freedom only comes by knowing the truth will set and I'm not, so I'm not trying to get people mad at you with what I when a man so you don't want to answer letters they have it. I personally think the churches played a big role in the death of truth in America. What role do you think of anything that the churches played in this.
What you're exactly right with weakness in America weakness and freedom around the world is the weakness in the church and again not preaching the truth but just coming together in the body of Christ name we pray for aunt Mabel and stuff like that. But we have to understand the power of God in this world actually comes from believers coming together in and in and out and actually displaying the love of Jesus displaying what God's attributes or that if that's true then again, what we see, we deceive the decline of America is the cause of the decline of the church and a lot of mainstream big churches now do not teach the Bible is true you one of my motivations along the way he does like 15 or 20 years ago my wife and I visited a church on Easter when we were at Hilton Head. This was a Presbyterian church like we went to back home, but the pastor told us wonderful, marvelous story, Jesus's resurrection and then he said after that, it doesn't matter if it's actually true. It only matters if you believe it and you I'm too much of his skeptic to go along with anything like that. It is not true about going to believe it but I couldn't believe the pastor said that but in various ways.
I think a lot of pastors and mainstream churches you mentioned nor afraid to offend, so they avoid parts of the Bible that teach moral absolutes which I don't think we need to be afraid of trees were all sinners going in. So while you may be doing one thing wrong and I'm doing something else were all sinners but Jesus died for all, so I think pastors can certainly wrap all the morality and love and forgiveness. But if we don't teach the truth in them. The Bible is not true and one the conclusions you have to draw Chris if the Bible is not all true that we don't know which porch porch with and so we can't trust it at all. So if we can't find by a study of the Bible to believe that all aspects of the Bible are true, then God is not left us a way to know him. That's a pretty important part problem, but I know the Bible is true and I think it people read Satan is there, they will see why you have to believe that the Bible is true, it could not have been written by mere man over thousands of years and again we need to know that it's true that the main it's always easy to understand or interpret about God left us a very clear message in a very obvious truth he did not.
So not only the Bible true. But Jesus is the truth.
And Jesus said on the way, the truth and the life no man, the father but by me. You were talking center about churches is how some churches and I think you start to become a majority of churches today don't. The pastor don't believe that the Bible hundred percent is true, Southern Baptist in and out of you followed in the news, but there's a big fight within the Southern Baptist convention right now to stand on the sufficiency of Scripture. The inerrancy of the word of God and realize that it inspired word of God because there are pastors around the nation, even in the Southern Baptist convention who don't believe this anymore and there are people in seminaries. I think we have. I think it's six official of the member seminaries across the country and even though the seminary Southern Baptist.
We chart training much more than Baptist seminary. In fact by most the pastors and seminaries to go to. So the member seminaries are not Southern Baptist.
So were training pastors around the world and what happened is CRT critical race theory is entered. Some of the seminary and we have professors you teaching and that's a false religion because it basically says there is no forgiveness for you. If you're white and in their teaching things that are not scriptural.
They teach that the Bible may not be true always or is not sufficient spotted Eric and what's happening is these men and women are now going in the churches around the world are mission field, and if they don't believe in the inspired word of God. We got a problem because like you said, Sen. It's either all true or if none of which true Christianity is not some cafeteria religion. We can't say what will some of this but I don't want some of that that's not how God set it up is true.
You got to stand on the truth yeah like Josh McDowell said same is true for Jesus either.
He's God or is limited and you don't really have a choice of saying he's a good man because he said he was God and he said he was the way the truth and the life that you cannot come come to the father except through him. And so there's some very hard truths in the Bible, but I believe a lot of the church today is becoming what we see in revelations, the false prophet and I think we'll see more and more. This kind of false church aligning with government woke this in the this kind of what's happening in but I don't get discouraged. Chris at least not to because I know God doesn't need a majority, and he shows us that throughout the Bible and so it just a remnant of faithful people and that's why again I'm not looking to win a majority but we made in every place in this country in this world of small groups of people who are faithful playing worshiping and telling the truth doing it in love when I could maybe go out and condemn and moralize everyone we have to help when people are saying think what is evil in their calling it good that that's a problem what we see all around today and I see so many Christians who afraid to refute that. So we need to be confident our faith. We need to be bold but we need to have a lot of wisdom we need to do it together because the prayers you righteous people when they come together. I can make a big difference in this world. I sure can. Both were talking to Sen. Jim DeMent and were talking about his new book, Satan is there, which is a novel where end in the knowledge character asking a lot of questions. Both Christians asking questions and atheist of of your why does God allow certain things that happened is creation true. So many of the questions it really. We were truthful in the back of our minds.
We wondered some of these things would encourage you to go and order the book right now on Amazon will sear right now you come back just a minute. Order your copy today at shop generous Joe's.and even subscribe to a subscription coffee plan and never forget you love or causes you care about time creating a relationship when hearing is joint United States. America has a strong Christian heritage Americans don't know the truly important role God in the Bible is indicated and found Dr. for me with crystalline bargaining journey having read much of America's missing here is how to blog about the government and the men who helped forge this new kind of Republic acknowledge the creator truth about the creation of the mounting father principles to join the Christian perspective, I guess today is a lot likely that one nailed it hard for about 15 years is been brewing in human dinner. Under what you mean. I've been toying with the book on Paul Revere for about five years.
There is a great weapon. Get that thing finished up but your book is a novel which is kind of a different format and in the novels were characters are asking questions about the Bible in his truly the word of God.
But I want to point out if you might have something you want to share about this, even though the characters are fictional. The things that are discussed in the Bible are true you list Bible verses Wayne why things happen the historical events archaeological prophetically.
All these things are true and that an accurate in the book is that correct that's true. Characters are talking about different questions and interpretations of the Bible, not everyone's going to agree with the different interpretations of some of the characters come up with but it always coming out of the Bible believing and assuming that the Bible is true and that we are trying to figure out what it's telling us about creation. No, even if it really six days creation or is it six. Some some people feel violently one way or another, but you can ask the question and come up with your own answer and determine if it really Matt about the key thing is God do it God create that sort, and then more important to me in a lot of ways is okay. Why did he do it. How do we know him better understanding only what he did but why he did it. I just find these questions very fascinating, but also confirm you'll see as you go through the book while the characters may have slightly different interpretations and some that may not line up completely with Orthodox Christianity there all searching the Bible for the truth and I think that pursuit is what's going to give Christians the confidence they need to to really stand boldly for Christ in a very difficult world. I think anything that gets us in God's word even if it takes something that little controversial asked questions that we just need to get God's word and that helps us out when we do that, so the book provides a framework for Christians really search for truth and do not settle on theology, but to get Christians to think, to discuss and defend their faith. Probably skeptics who might be out there to do you think this book will also answer questions were maybe people who are Christians are skeptics of the word of God. You think it might help lead them in the right direction all yet is primarily written for skeptics, but also for Christians who were not very knowledgeable about the Bible so I think skeptics will get as much or more out of the book than anyone else in and I think some of the debates about creation. I mean, there's actually a real debate in the first couple chapters that it is really hard to refute because statistics, biology, physics, all tell us that it's impossible for this world to happen by accident it in and we get into that and insist is very clear that don't mean there's a God, but it's you, have to back into the fact that there have to be a God if it didn't happen by accident.
So again, a lot of this is just common sense and deductive logic and you don't even need a Bible to know that there is a God. If you take amount moment to think about it, so that's what we're doing here is just as challenging. Skeptics unbelievers and Christians who may not be very knowledgeable about what they actually do believe and the just people get different things out of the book and I found that people are really about Orthodox Christians that they'll find things in there that they say no, you shouldn't even assess question people should not even consider that, but all of it comes from verses in the Bible so again I think people will not all these questions will give them confidence that sounds contradictory, but unless you're willing to ask questions and again, you'll never be confident in what you believe what I know you're committed to restoring Judeo-Christian values in America, do you think this book will help do that. I hope so that's what I'm counting on because again working in public office in the house and Senate them at the national level.
You have just come to believe that faith and freedom are two sides of the same coin, and we're just not going to maintain this country without a better understanding of the commitment to God's word and but what we know from Scripture that if we repent. If we return to God that he will restore our nation and we just say such a deterioration going on now with crime and morality and people saying spreading around the world will have to notice you may have to ask why is this happening and the reason is happening is so secularism is has been pushing Christianity out of the picture and the United States will just not operate our Constitution will not work. People cannot be free unless they have a faith in God.
I know you talk about this in the book, but do you think that God still in control of things when there's so much evil in the world today. That's one of the big questions in the book, how can he be in control.
I believe you sovereign over all part of the big discussion in the book is physical journey through here is God allowing good and evil battle it out. This is the battle of good and evil in one of the theories in the book is that the great war in heaven that we read about in Revelation is actually going on right now and we are the physical counterparts of the angels fighting against Satan. That may sound overly deep right now but it is if you began to understand how the Scripture set set up and you realize that God has deferred his power in this world and in some areas to the body.
His body is people in order to prove Satan wrong God that Job is not just one person is representative of the body of Christ and Satan has said okay if you don't bless them person so God is allowing things to happen just like you did with Joe that seem unthinkable to us and it makes us mad that God let Satan do what he did to Joe, but pointing the book is that this is put this is justice is allowing justice to play golf is allowing our free will to decide between good and evil. And every time we decide. Good. Every time we worship God.
We believe defeat Satan and that's how it's all going to come to an end, I believe, is body of Christ will defeat Satan in this world because of faithfulness in the face of all the suffering and tragedy, so it's kind of a deep thought. Again, maybe a lot of people don't want to go there but we know from wall don't really find the truth and you find the motives we look at what are the motives of God, and I think what's happening in this world reveals his character his character model of forgiveness and mercy that we understand how all this works together we can understand this life a lot better and that why the next new world be so dependent on the blood of Christ, the main truth that we need to lead to is the one that you just talk about is the blood of Jesus Christ and we need to realize the truth is that these bodies are these these human bodies.
You only last 70 or 80 years are lucky a little bit longer but there's a E eternal soul within this going to spend all of eternity somewhere one day and that the decisions that we make in this life, whether we spent an eternity in hell for an eternity in heaven with the presence of God as we close out the show.
Can you take a couple minutes in and if you don't mind share with our listeners that truth. How can someone have eternal life with God and how can they come to know him and have a relationship with Chris. It's so easy.
I think people are maybe afraid to take this step because you don't have to have ever seen a Bible to be safe, but all we need to do Chris. For those of never made a decision they have to have a faith that they all do that they have two exceptions in their centers and that God will forgive them we just asked to receive Christ, and will we do, God gives us his Holy Spirit, and so is just a matter of repenting and asking for forgiveness and asking God to come live in our hearts when we are, even if we're not faithful if we fail him over and over again, we commit ourselves to him. He's faithful and he will complete that work on his timetable. So we really don't have to do much but it's kind of the hardest things humans have can do is submit God. People seem so willing to submit so many other thing is just submit to God asked Jesus to come in our hearts. That'll change your life and give you eternity with God and man. And then he turned and it is forever the life changing experience will folks are our guest today is Sen.
