So the hundredth anniversary this Thursday and if you've ever been to the tomb of the unknown soldiers, particularly if you've ever watch the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier. It's just a remarkable majestic somber humbling experience and so honoring of the men and women that have served this nation, especially those that have fallen in the tomb of the unknown soldier is something that you should see at least once in your lifetime.
And this is their creed. This is called the Sentinel's Creed my dedication to the sacred duty is total and wholehearted and the responsibility bestowed on me, never will I falter and with dignity and the variance.
My standard will remain perfection through the years of diligence and praise and the discomfort of the elements I will walk my tour and humble reverence to the best of my ability. It is he who commands the respect I protect his bravery that made us so proud surrounded by well-meaning crowds by day alone in the thoughtful piece of night, this soldier will and honor and glory rest under my eternal vigilance.
That's the Sentinel's Creed, the name of the book is 21 steps guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier beautifully illustrated by Matt Taveras and written by Jeff got expelled was an American novelist, a playwright, screen and television writer and in the last several years is live and focusing on children's books and this one is absolutely spectacular and beautiful Jeff welcome to show how are you I would go on are you waiting for hours now man that must've been quite a remarkable honors and a lot of people that get to do that. Could you you you got a lot going on up there this week and I didn't realize this Thursday, November 11 was the hundredth anniversary of the actual tomb itself.
And then of course it's mind-boggling to me and I and I just learned this from reading through your book is able to get a copy that the guards have been there 24 seven literally since July 2, 1937. It's really just an awesome thing to contemplate what was that Jephthah can allege you to put together 21 steps will grew up quickly after when I was in high school and college. My my outlook on United. That America was skeptical at what I grew up in different Europe for a while and I came to believe with good reason that the United States military is probably the greatest force for good. The planet has ever known. Those with that attitude, I became open to writing the book yet because I was reading that every year you your visiting different national cemeteries and that and that something in what you mentioned.
Jeff and I really appreciate you sharing that with us is something that most Americans lack perspective of a never leave the country that will travel around and see things there there pretty much stuck with an hundred miles over they graduated from high school, but it's II think what what you've experienced Jephthah something that especially the younger generation need to express understand the skepticism or that of the disinterest I teach US history and civics myself by school-age homeschoolers but it's so wonderful to hear your story, and I think there's a lot of Americans that need to experience the thing same thing that you have. I don't I don't deify the founding fathers nor do I deify the military of the country itself a boy.
We should certainly have a deep level of appreciation for a great deal of good guard men and women book from the perspective of no telling the story. There are men and women of every really religion and creed. Before joining the Army. They were from the karmic supermarket backer on the back, whether they are from California or Oklahoma or Texas store are a number of the Choctaw nation. Standard perfection yeah and that's really that's one of the only places I've ever seen. I think I've ever seen that standard achieve what the significance of 21. The name of the book is 21 steps are kept talking to Jeff got his felt a great question.
Great question. Great for after when school goes back to the middle age reading Christopher: both that when a sailing ship appeared on the horizon.
It was not always a good thing you didn't know what was coming out with hospital. In fact, click develop where big ships with fire there out 57 times. They were coming in. And Natalie would respond with 21 that was the time that everything was going to be done with respect and honor that. Yeah, that said so much about the story what's going on at the tomb 24 seven literally day and night no matter what the weather is what the time of the year is the holidays off.
It is so pregnant with so much meaning, and then knowing that it goes back to that by 2021 actually is significance in the way that they actually perform their duties doesn't take about 21 and they have read everything they do on a map, marched in the way. All work will hold their rightful amendment will stop you. 21 second turn 21 2121 after 21) and honor for the under yeah know something about it when they first talking to Jeff got expelled is the author and then beautifully illustrated by Matt Taveras 21 steps. I got the link up to the you can get that in.
And by the way, even though this is going to quote a children's book. I mean, I was just captivated by looking at it in its beautifully illustrated in the story and there is told in in the first person from the unknown soldier is superpowerful, so I who cares whether your child or not we should all have a copy of this I got the link on Amazon for Amazon so you get the book, but it really is something that kind of takes you back the first time you see it. Jeff is were just not used to seeing that kind of let level of perfection working hit the breaker to second, but on the other side of what I want to talk about what's actually going on up at the tomb of the unknown soldier and what your experiences been there and, how you researched and then writing this in the first person of the unknown soldier himself, which isn't the only one that's been laid to rest. The first one which came on the heels of the great first world war were talking Jeff got a spell 21 steps is the name of the book. Beautifully illustrated, beautifully written Jeff on the put you on hold or to pick it up there as we honor our veterans this Veterans Day on Thursday the 100th anniversary of the laying down of the tomb of the unknown soldier this is Steve Noble will be right back. There's a man going around in the back of Steve Noble to steer Noble show this Thursday, November 11, Veterans Day.
So make sure you observe that, accordingly, pray for those not in the military. Those that are serving as them and women in the military from the top to the bottom and honor any veteran that you can but this Thursday, November 11 is the 100th anniversary of the tomb of the unknown soldier goes all the way back to November 11, 1921. Shortly thereafter, 16 years later that the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier that started on July 2, 1937, 1937, and ever since then 24 seven.
No matter what time of day whether there's people there are not, whether it's nice nice weather or horrific, whether they are there, were reading this little excerpt here from 21 steps guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier by Jeff got a spell and illustrated by Matt Taveras is just incredible book. I get the links up on Facebook live today.
See you get that great idea for a gift for Christmas.
By the way, anybody that served in the military will love this.
Children will be fascinated by this. But whether your younger older grandfather mother.
Whatever the case may be.
This this book is captivating its beautifully illustrated. It's a powerful message that were losing in this country just in terms of honoring them the minute women that have served in the good that this nation optically. The military is done for other people around the world that don't live here is something that we need to honor and pay attention to the tomb guards are men and women of every race, religion, and creed. Before joining the Army. There were students mechanics and Supermart backers.
They have me families and stories. Once on the mat. They are only Americans there standard is perfection. And that's from the book 21 steps really really powerful again.
Jeff got his felt is what this Jeff again, thank you for taking the time to be on the show today in honor to be with you and just wonderful to have you here so I tell me about your experiences out there and I counted you prepare for this. What kind of research did you do in order to be able to come to take on that position of speaking in the first person for the unknown soldier you look. You know I'm not military armor bill.
You don't come from a military family.
So I approached with the greatest humility of my life. I read everything I could. I watched every documentary I could and then what I felt. I got help from tomb guards who were willing to read every word and critique every word filled by the time I was done I was close to perfect on the possible and macular. Same way with his artwork. Yeah, it's really beautiful and captivating. What were those soldiers like the ones that you interacted with that observed at the 2B word from young men and women.
And yeah, I mean, some of them were were women who I've ever met in my life be.
I said to me like a question regular isn't this just like to watch please think of the metal finishing your uniform, checking for Winton on the 21, and one of them fit for me. Think about the unknown out there and he gave every day that I can give is my very very best for two years got from you and it's really amazing. Jeff and I appreciate you Sharon It's really amazing that in and thank God that we still have young men and women that have that kind of tenacity that kind of internal fortitude in and desire to serve sacrificially that they kinda see the big picture because the of our country is slipping away from that quickly. As you know, in India you are down that road yourself. I've been down that road myself, where we don't really appreciate it. But to have young men and women like this that just see past the noise of of life in the 21st century and everything going on and in that state that they value country and value somebody that nobody knows the unknown soldier really is encouraging and in and quite challenging to me that that hey do I do I think like that that level of honor they have for this duty is is incredible, and for two years. I mean it's just kind of mind-boggling.
You could read this book in front of her younger audience, even the big city you would be hard because you understand things like Rev. and devotion and courage, and respect don't hear it that much family with children.
Here's a children's book. You know that shows you noteholders who gave everything including their names, mere faith, and then more soldiers give everything in devotion to the unknown. Transfixed by this beloved to get it. What was sure what was your goal. Jeff talking to Jeff got a cell 21 steps is the name of the book guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier beautifully written and beautifully illustrated by Matt Taveras. You mention what what was your goal in writing this. What was your hope. My hope was that a little while young person will get you a bit of an outlier and children's book. Yes, that's a letter that they will stop and think about the important of golf and felt quick service to a country, you know you go to Arlington you've been there a place where identity is given up voluntarily in both postservice to your country, at least temporarily, all those veterans have done it.
And really, really good. I want to yeah and it certainly that message then received MSP and you mention this. Jeff, it must be incredibly gratifying and in a fit and really to feel the hand of the Lord on you when you're there talking to these young kids see them transfixed. That way was the what were you expecting when you first started to read the booklet of the young audio almost like I would call to write this I'm an unlikely messenger. Inmate in many ways you know and I'm Jewish.
And like you report prayer at the beginning of the service were like the rabbi spiritually I'm not working to do the and I'm not really working to like what I was called to write and I did and now to see the impact that it is having on people of all age is just gratifying.
I want to do more. I want to do more like what I think and that's and you and I are in a similar vein on this one because that's why I teach high school age homeschoolers. I got seven classes and hundred 15 students every week and I look and I look at them going there. Not really going to get this kind of story or information of the truth of these things and I and I try to be as honest and straightforward as I can, do not really getting it in a public school setting. Even in a lot of private school settings and something like this with 21 steps at a very young age.
As you mentioned. They understand those things because they have been tainted yet there there still open to hearing these things and specially captivated by a moving story and the illustrations like this and I think that's on us to to continue to not give up on these future generations as our founding fathers would put a premium on their posterity.
I think we need to do the same for at the calling for you.
Jeff obviously but I think it's a calling on all of us don't think I often you can't blame people for things that they haven't been taught this book you a way of teaching but also elevating and pushing. I'm all in favor of values like kindness and compassion and tolerance want to embrace both but they're not the only one, and values like courage and honor, respect and appreciation and gratitude of yeah they also matter and in that's a message that deftly needs to be heard the name of the book 21 steps guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier you can just Google that or go to Amazon and get the links up on the Facebook life you today and I'll put it on my regular Facebook page.
After that, but Jeff, what a great job. God bless you sir for taking the time to do this.
It's been awesome text. Thank you so much for having so good to have. I just got expelled on this Thursday honoring veterans. Another thing that we try to talk about as often as possible on this show and in my classes when I'm teaching US history or civics or Christian ethics. The issue of life is a Rick to make a regular appearance on the show. I don't really paying attention to what other people think. I bring it up too often or force it into the conversation.
Too often this is something that we cannot let slip down the line of things that we pay attention to her that we care about is that we pray about the issue of life to worry we are honoring our veterans. Now let's spend the rest the show honoring life. Nobody does it all a lot better than our friends at love life. I've been trying to help, love, life, and been a part of love life for several years now is just an outstanding organization. God just continues to expand their territory in their reach and it's just been awesome to watch a Josh Kappes one of the leaders at love life and longtime friend Josh, thanks for calling buddy how are you I'm good for you I'm good, it's so good to hear your voice like likewise so let's do further from folks that might not be very familiar with love life. Let's do kind of a love life 101 a little reintroduction. If you weld a history of love life and will talk about what's been going on this year for the last year it's been a lot of changes on the growth and in some big things going on this week that we want to invite everybody to your career read through your work you outwit your love life by elevator. Love life ministry to the church to be mobilized evangelical churches become around abortion vulnerable family waited we do that is by hosting 40 weeks of people.
Prayer walk on Saturday and 14 different cities currently around United and we have crafters to adopt one of those 40 weeks bring the people out.
We walked that church will force that Proctor Nehemiah story in that here. Pray going connect so the Sunday of an adoption week after preached on life.
Wednesday the church prays.
In fact, together on Saturday is the actual prayer walk at the people. Prayer walk, worship and prayer service protester picket and in then at the end of that prayer walk is really the key element to our mission of changing the culture toward love and life is what we ask people to get involved in ongoing ministry. We don't want people just to check the box to come to a clear walk box if you're pro-life you for the year, but that prayer walk is meant to be a moment where the Lord opens their eyes to the mission field in our city and mentor themselves the question what does the Lord want me to do mentoring the family into cycling a family that chooses life is getting out there on the sidewalk during the week, offering the hope of the gospel and help church's orphan care is rescuing the orphan, not only in the world but outside of the deck in foster care and in need of forever Christian family. Or maybe it's post-abortive cared all sorts of ways for people to get involved at the end of the day we exist to unite and mobilize the church to create a culture of love and life that will result in an end to abortion, and the orphan crisis and so just real briefly in our history. We were founded in 2016 in Charlotte North Carolina.
After a handful of Christian business owners invited our founder, Justin live out to a meeting at the local abortion clinic or here in Charlotte but the Lord really opened Justin's eyes to what we call the tragic truth of abortion in our city that 30 to 50 babies were being aborted on a regular basis. There each day and in and in reality it was just a small handful of faithful Christians that were out there and even speaking for my own story of your prior love life. I was at the thought never occurred to the church there.
The Lord raised Justin up and gave him a clear vision for how to get the church out this mission field to be exposed to what's going on.
But during the light of the gospel were not there or should work well. She's and we love people and Jesus cared deeply about the people who were there, and so here. What started with the just a handful of people in Charlotte has now grown after we 40 be over hundred thousand prayer walkers and were in 14 cities that we went from 189, 2016 to Greensboro and Raleigh in 2018 and in Manhattan in 2019. And then of course last year during coded of the Lord used all that great to kick his across the nation and so you know we we went from fourth canal 14 cities and by God's grace we want 14 more cities in 2022 and provide more storage and share with others, because there think of covered the 101.
I think that's great. And one of the things about it, not just my students. I stayed on the air with people when it comes to the life issue. I was think of James and James said you show me your faith by what you say and I'll show you my faith by what we do, why what I do and in for us Christians listen I don't know any born-again Christians that are serious about their faith that are conventionally pro-life. Okay, that's awesome right that's the default position you should be.
There's no argument there at the theologically takes about 30 seconds to get to cross the line on that. But then the question is, what you doing with that convictional pro-life position where you do it at this James is you'd say hey I'm a pro-life Christian.
Okay, it's great, but what are you doing about it because in this culture, and the what we seen since 1973 and before you to use the word genocide is not over the top. It's not hyper hyperbolic weather talk about 62 million dead children here in America. The 40 million per year worldwide. This is really kind of one of those things for a Christian that the question is, and should I be involved.
The question is what are you doing and that's what really happened when he got to the prayer walk sensitizes people to the darkness and the relevance and the need to get in but involved. I've seen it happen time and time again right yeah the beauty of love like after our church still part of life before Kimmel and you know first time there. I just never thought this is where and when I went back there and they showed me a pathway to activate my people. I went from you.
Why would I bring my church year to I have to bring my church here. And what's so great. Not only our church family.
But so many now we partnered with over 500 churches across the nation is that not only are people getting activated into one of those for specific ministry areas. But Christians are just being awakened in their own walk with Jesus in California earlier this year. She said I was dead Christian. I read my Bible. I hardly pray and then I started volunteering would love life and amount on the sidewalk. Now I read my Bible every day.
I pray God's miracle my life and so the church is coming alive and Christians are are getting away from you sitting and getting into the mission field using the gift of the Spirit is given, then using her personality in her life. I'm to engage with people with the hope of the gospel and it's a beautiful thing. The miracles that are happening.
The transformation taking place and spreading like wildfire with stop recruiting in the middle of this year and we just had so many people coming in just we just felt like a policy or permitted 14 that we have and make sure their healthy before we just keep adding new cities and so God is doing an exciting being in the church and in COBIT and all the measures all the craziness that that all that doing is serving to awaken the people of God. The people were filled with the spirit of God. Note this is our time to stand for Christ to love people will stand on truth and to them to get out of the four walls of the church and make a difference in the world. That's right. And I think that there's a lot of hidden blessings there in COBIT and me, and I was there in Greensboro on Facebook life.
The morning that Justin Reeder and several other pastors got arrested because they dare to come out and pray in public, next to the abortion clinic and that Greensboro as well as North Carolina rules on and COBIT restrictions were ridiculous and I tell people all the time in my students as well.
This this Saturday which will talk about on the other side of the break is the week 40 celebrations. I'll be bring a bunch of students. My students out. But I tell people all the time. Josh, you know this that take you. This is like a a spiritual wake-up call. You go to a love life for your lock because it's got to sensitize you just like the story the woman in California. All of a sudden it's going be like electroshock spiritual therapy because the darkest place you can go in America spiritually is literally across the street from where babies are being killed moms or be of deceived fathers are abdicating their responsibility. I mean it's dark and difficult.
The people there.
On the other side of the street. I hate us.
They don't want to see us at all flipped upside down for them what evil is good. What's good is evil but it will awaken a spirit in you that's like like okay so this is really what it means to walk with Jesus is to live in the midst of that spiritual warfare and to bring the love and the truth in the in the in the extension of the gospel wherever you can go and so it really has an impact on the rest of your Christian life, not just your pro-life position right yeah and you know, like so many thing, love, affection and love to wall people into doing nothing or doing the minimal to get by until you know for years and years in this country and especially in the church. Abortion is a political issue is out of sight out of mind if we can just get the right Supreme Court justices way right honey I can give money to my local printer care center and they can handle it and listen. They do a phenomenal job but if you require bodies.
